Design Process

- While there are many different ways to approach the level design process, the goals are generally the same; to create play surfaces that support the vision of the game.

- Team composition, level of experience, production pipelines, and available technology are just some of the factors that can influence the design process. Regardless of the approach, it can be helpful to break the process down into discrete steps that all serve to answer some basic questions.

Step One: Why, What, and How?

Step Two: When? "Graphing" the experience

Step Three: Where? The Layout

Step Four: Realization

- Breaking down the steps can be helpful for several reasons. It helps us quickly establish a good foundation, allows for quick reviews after each step, prevents us from becoming too "invested " in any single idea, and helps to preserve the forward momentum of the design process.

- A well thought out design complete with documentation and rough play-surface prototypes generally takes between 8-12 days with this process. This may vary based on several factors such as the number of goals that the level must support, existing technology, the modeling proficiency of the design team and the amount of documentation required to put the level into the production pipeline.
