Level Design:
- The role of "Level Designer" can vary dramatically from team to team. Years ago, it was common for level designers to handle nearly every aspect of the design and environmental construction including scripting and even the lighting. Today, as games and teams grow larger, its common to see more "specialization" where there is a distinct division between designers and environmental artists. There are many pros and cons to each system and it can sometimes be difficult to say which one is better than the other. The type of game, the team's composition, and the studio's chosen technologies are all factors that help in defining roles among the team.
- Regardless of how the roles are defined, its critical that the design and the environmental construction are are aligned with the technology to best support the overall vision of the game. It can be a tremendous advantage to have someone in place who understands each discipline and their respective production pipelines in order to successfully develop an optimal and truly cohesive game experience.
